Yes, human need for play is located in the same area that regulates breathing and keeps our heart beating.  Play is not a luxury it is a biological need of bodies.  This three-hour workshop will explore play in all its forms. Participants will be encouraged to fully embrace play in children’s learning environments and their own lives. Looking at play through theory, examples, and hands-on fun, participants will leave with a complete view of play that can be used immediately with people of all ages.

Learning Objectives

“Know” Knowledge & Understanding

  • Understand the neurobiological importance of play and fun for both adult and child health.
  • Distinguish between play (an activity characterized by enjoyment, presence, and curiosity) and fun (the feeling of playfulness + connection + flow).
  • Explore the many types of play humans engage in and learn from.

“Do” Apply Skills & Practice

  • Practice different types of play (What better way to learn?)
  • Apply play observation skills that can be used for planning and documentation.
  • Explore strategies to transform a child’s challenging behaviours into opportunities for playful, relationship-based responses that promote regulation and joy

“Be” Professional Growth & Transformation

  • Facilitate learning rooted in well-being practices and commitment to sustaining play as a foundational source of connection and growth.
  • Remain committed the value of learning through play by remaining playful in your own interactions with children and adults.
  • Embrace playfulness as a core part of their professional identity, overcoming barriers to reclaim fun amid the demands of early childhood work
